Visiting California’s Honey Town

Monterey bay is increasingly becoming a great place for Bee keepers. Tourists are in increasingly going there to visit the Bee farms and to sample the honey they produce.

One event in the city is The Amazing World of Bees which includes a ninety minute instructional tour discussing the role of the bee in nature and the role that beekeeping plays in the area as well as the world at large. This takes place at Carmel Valley Ranch at has honey and bee product related tastings in addition to interactive exhibits.

Nor is The Amazing World of Bees the only bee related thing to see in Monterey County. Nearby restaurants serve homemade honey from bee hives on the property. For example, the Bernardus Lodge and Spa used honey from three hives on site to prepare dishes for the Lucia Restaurant. Examples of some dishes include bee infused cocktails.

The are even has a 15 year old, Jake Riesdorf, who started over 125 different bee hives and began selling honey over the internet and to some local retailers. You can visit his website www.carmelhoneycompany.com and buy honey as well as accessories like t-shirts. Jake will even show you how to pair his honey with various dishes like apples and cheese.

Honey is a local product in that regardless of where you eat it, the flavors bring back the flowers and pollen from the local plants that the bees used to create the honey. Monterey is now considered a leading company for honey production.
