With the exception of those living under a rock, you’ve probably at least heard of our nation’s newest Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos. When I first heard of DeVos, I was intrigued to research her background, and find out for myself exactly what she stands for and what her background entails. I was surprised to find a wealth of experience in not only advocating for children, but also for empowering artists, fighting cancer and a long standing history of experience and activism. Philanthropy through the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation is very prominent and focuses on community, education, arts, justice and leadership.
DeVos is passionate about education, and her credentials are reflective of such. She is chairman of the American Federation for Children, the nations largest school choice advocacy group, and also serves on the board of the Foundation for Excellence in Education. She has not only served as an advocate for children and parent’s having a choice in education, she has served and spearheaded many mentor programs and even motivated her husband to start a public charter high school called the West Michigan Aviation Academy, encouraging vocational and technical education, giving student’s a chance to excel to new levels previously thought nearly impossible. DeVos believes nobody should be limited by their zip code in order to access quality education and an environment in which they will thrive rather than succomb to whatever the locality chooses to provide at its convenience. Betsy DeVos’ political career began long ago by volunteering for President Ford. She has since been influential in many Republican leadership roles, political action committees, and has also been elected at the state level in Michigan four times to serve on the Republican National Committee. DeVos has also served on the Board of Trustees for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, a perfect fit as she is passionate about art and design. She also has hosted ArtPrize, which is an international art competition in Grand Rapids. Ms. DeVos is not only a well rounded leader, she also makes time for focusing on her family, grandchildren and spirituality. A self described “disruptor,” she is ready to take on Washington and bring our educational system back to first place. She is more than equipped, and up for the challenge!
